USHL Arena Review - Icebox Arena - Lincoln, NE - UPDATED

by Redwing77

Updates at the bottom and in italics where necessary

About the Icebox Arena

The Icebox Arena is the USHL home of the Lincoln Stars.  This arena was built in 1951 but was not originally built for hockey.  The conversion to a hockey arena came in 1997.  It seats just over 4,000 people.

The Facility

This arena is OLD and it's pretty apparent that, when they built this in 1951, the builders never envisioned ice hockey in the facility.  I do not know what this building was originally used for, but sources I talked to suggested it was used for things like agricultural fairs (like 4-H functions), rodeos, and the like.  It does have a concert configuration that would seat 5,000 but I've never heard of a concert being held at this facility.  It truly seems like the Stars are the primary tenants.

The arena features true rustic flavor with only a few upgrades that separate it from the likes of the Buccaneer Arena of Des Moines.  There is a bar area that opens up to the arena at the north end of the rink as well as a small balcony that seats a few fans (sorry, I am unaware of exactly how many).

The seating is very basic plastic fold-down seating.  They are more comfortable and less splinter-prone than the Buccaneer Arena's benches but other than that, it's about the same atmosphere (without the fans).  Sadly, the arena could be DRAMATICALLY improved if they invested in cup holders.  As it may, full houses at the arena are NOT pleasant experiences if you are trying to do anything other than watch the game.

There are no screens or fancy technology like jumbotrons in this arena.  I am unsure as to why they have not done what Buccaneer arena has done and simply hoisted a projector screen and mounted a projector to the roof.  If PowerPoint and basic video could work for Des Moines, it would work for Lincoln.

The most notable "issues" lie in bathrooms.  Be prepared to do some waiting as there appears to be only one men's and one women's bathroom. I cannot speak about the women's bathroom but the men's bathroom isn't the cleanest and well maintained.  Okay, I was told that there are in fact 4 mens bathrooms in this facility.  I say "told" because all but one must be hidden in the Club area.  I've yet to find them.

Also, the lighting is not very good and, though you won't have trouble seeing anything (especially if it is on the ice), it does seem like it is very much like a cave inside the arena.I'm told they have HD lighting...whatever that is.  However, no matter how offended the complaint is about this comment, I stand by it.  This is the only arena I've ever been to where I could not make out what people on the other side of the rink were wearing.  I know that's not the point of a hockey game, but... if it wasn't on the ice it wasn't really clear to see without the spotlight.  Sorry, but I stand by my comment.

In the concourse they have big projector screens that show whatever hockey games they can find on television...or football games if the purveyors deem it important enough to the Lincoln crowd.  Why they can do this and not put on in the rink area, nor post goal cameras for replays is beyond me.

I cannot give this facility a good grade.  However, it IS better than Des Moines.

Grade:  C-

Ice Quality

If you discount aesthetics, the ice is good, but not great.  They do not have the rough ice that Kearney has, but there are issues.  Most notable issues lies in bacterial growth between layers of ice that gives the ice a blotchy, brown color in places.  The coolant pipes aren't well placed either, most likely due to the conversion process rather than the purpose-built nature of the building.  This has caused the ice crew to accidentally drill into the coolant pipes when drilling the holes for the goal pegs.  This season has already seen a game called due to this issue.

Grade:  C-

Food

So far, not so good for the Icebox, but here's where it improves.  This arena features fresh grilled burgers and brats as well as Valentino's Pizza (for those of you who do not know it, Valentino's Pizza actually tastes good in Nebraska) on top of the typical arena fare.  Quite honestly, the burgers are great and you can vouch for their freshness as you can watch them being grilled outdoors as you walk into the arena.

Sadly, they serve Pepsi.

Grade:  A

Entertainment

Ok, they do not have a lot of technology in this building but what they DO have as what is quite honestly the BEST opening intro in the USHL that I've seen.  It is a nice mix of rock music and lighting (often featuring music by Eminem, Metallica, Marilyn Manson, AC/DC, theme from Halloween, and I'm sure others).  The centerpiece is a massive metal worked Lincoln Star emblem that is lowered from the ceiling and lit with a light show during introductions.  It is simply fantastic.  I'd argue the intros plus a burger is worth admission by itself.

The Icebox also features a really good PA announcer (UND fans may get this reference:   Their PA announcer reminds me a lot of Scott Hannan (sp) when he did UND games at the Ralph).  He's basically a one man show doing all of the PA announcements and, IIRC, the intermission entertainment as well.

Intermission entertainment varies from game to game but I've seen human bowling and chuck a puck promotions, though the chuck a puck promotion was not a regular event like it is in Des Moines, Omaha, and Kearney.

They also feature a guy with a hot dog cannon.  This wouldn't be all that noteworthy if it wasn't the same guy that does the Husker home games... and if you knew what all that air pressure and the walls of the arena did to those hot dogs....  It's good for a laugh at least.

This arena also has a playlist that occurs at almost every single game.  At certain times in the game, a song will come on and the spotlight will highlight someone who dances with or without a gimmick or it will promote a certain reaction by the crowd.

For example, every game features an Elvis song with a man who is spotlit and dances with an Elvis wig and glasses on (the guy's nickname is even Elvis it appears).  Or they'll play the theme from Hawaii 5-0h and Section K will make the motions of rowing a canoe complete with yelling "stroke" and switching directions upon the command of a brave leader in that section.  Other songs featured are Cotton Eye Joe and Mickey by Toni Basil.

Grade:  A to A+

The Visitor Experience

As a Lancer fan, the experience is very varied.  The Lincoln Stars have the same relationship with the Omaha Lancers as UND has with Minnesota.  I have talked to Lancer fans who have not been treated very well at the Icebox and I have talked to Stars fans who have not been treated well by Lancer fans.

In the end, it depends upon behavior at the rink and the section you sit in.  I, personally, wouldn't dream of sitting anywhere other than Section K.  The people I have met in that section were truly fantastic people and have a great sense of humor.

Grade:  A+

Overall

The Icebox, to me, is a great place, but it is an acquired taste.  Those of us who are used to high tech or state of the art facilities most likely will not like the Icebox.  It isn't that hostile of an environment for a visitor and the food and entertainment is top notch, though.  As for the future, this building is beyond its useful life... and the Stars are locked into the facility for the better part of 20 more years.  There are questions as to what will happen to the Stars as the Icebox sits on land that the University of Nebraska Lincoln could very well claim for their own (the Icebox is just across a parking lot from the Devaney Center, the former home of Husker basketball).  I, for one, hope they do figure something out sooner rather than later.  I do not know if the Icebox will survive the Stars' lease.

Grade:  B- (Facility lowers the score, sadly)

UPDATE Text:  Apparently someone was really offended by this review, but I stand by it.  I went there as a visitor, not as a member of the media.  The person who complained cited some benefits to the arena that, quite honestly, make no difference to the general public (I could care less about any rooms offered to the media and scouts.  I do not get to use it nor do 99% of the people who go to the games).  It's not highly inaccurate as the complainer protests.  It is my honest opinion of the arena experience.  He cites  that over $500,000 in improvements were made to the arena since new ownership took over.  That's a lot of money, sure, but whatever improvements were made, they must be behind the scenes or happened before the first time I stepped in the arena last spring.

Quite honestly, I understand the pride in an organization and the people you work for and represent, but it is what it is.  The Icebox is an old arena.  It wasn't originally built for hockey.  They've done a good job adapting it for the most part but there are serious issues with the arena (age being one of them and the bacteria is another).  I said it before:  I stand by my review.  The Icebox isn't a dump.  It is a great place to see hockey, but there could be improvements.  The two most pressing improvements, in my opinion, would be cup holders and installing a goal cam system for booth reviews.  After that, do what Des Moines did and put up two screens and two projectors and Viva les PowerPoint!  I would say the ice issue, but I have no solution for that and I doubt the folks at the Icebox are just sitting back and saying "Oh well" on that issue.

NCAA Hockey: Expanded video replay criteria approved for men's, women's hockey

Here are some of the changes to come down from the NCAA Ice Hockey Rules Committee.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved several changes to the criteria for allowing video replay in men’s and women’s ice hockey, effective for the 2014-15 season.
The replay changes were recommended by the Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee during its meeting in June as part of a number  of recommendations intended to improve the game and were circulated to coaches and conferences for comment prior to PROP’s approval.
The added scenarios are:
Goals may be reviewed to determine if they are scored before a penalty occurred.
• If an offsides or too many men on the ice penalty is missed and a goal is scored, the play may be reviewed if the puck remains in the offensive zone after the missed infraction. If the puck leaves the attacking zone, the offsides or too many men on the ice penalty is no longer reviewable. This replaces the previous wording that only allowed a review if the missed play directly led to a goal.
• It was clarified that the video used for replays may come from any source that is available to the game officials. Previously, the video used was required to come from a television broadcast.

New AHL Rules for 2014-15

s/t to Paul of Kukla's Korner. Some interesting rule changes are coming to the American Hockey League for the 2014-15 season. Frankly, I wish they would leave the overtime the way it is. I do like rule 20.4. I think two fights in one game is enough.
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League’s Board of Governors has concluded its 2014 Annual Meeting, held this week at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Chaired by AHL President and CEO David Andrews, the four days of meetings, which concluded Thursday, saw the approval of the following rules changes to be implemented beginning in 2014-15:

Rule 85 (“Overtime”) During the regular season, the sudden-death overtime period will be seven minutes (7:00) in length, preceded by a “dry scrape” of the entire ice surface.

Teams will change ends at the start of overtime.

Full playing strength will be 4-on-4 until the first whistle following three minutes of play (4:00 remaining), at which time full strength will be reduced to 3-on-3 for the duration of the overtime period.

If the game is still tied following overtime, a winner will be determined by a three-player shootout.

Rule 20.4 (“Major Penalties”) An automatic game misconduct will be applied to any player who has been assessed two major penalties for fighting or three major penalties for any infraction in the same game.

Rule 9.6 (“Helmets”) A player on the ice whose helmet comes off during play will be assessed a minor penalty unless he immediately (a) exits the playing surface or (b) puts the helmet back on with the chin strap properly fastened.

“With the full support of the league’s Competition Committee and Player Development Committee, the Board has approved these changes with the betterment of our game and the safety of our players in mind,” said Andrews.

The Breakdown of the Hockey Rink

This one is kind of funny, the break down of the NHL Hockey Rink. I would like to have one for college with the Wehr's Corner.

UND Advances to the Frozen Faceoff with Series Win

English: Ralph Engelstadt Arena at the Univers...
Grand Forks, ND – Coming into game three of their best-of-three series, the University of North Dakota Hockey team had no room for error. It’s was do-or-die, lose, and they most certainly would miss the NCAA tourney. There’s would be no second chances for the Green and White if they lost game three against the Colorado College Tigers.
After going 3-3-0 over the last three weekends, UND was once again a team sitting on the NCAA Tournament bubble.   With that in the back of their mind, the UND hockey team was exited to play under those terms.  They seemed to embrace it.
“I guess it’s exciting,” senior forward Derek Rodwell said. “It’s one of the games that you want to get up for and play. We knew everyone on this team was going to bring it tonight. Everything was on the line. We were going to put it down and play for each other. We did that tonight.”
Those sentiments were echoed by assistant captain Stephane Pattyn
“We were excited,” Pattyn said. “I think getting to the rink this morning we kind of wanted to keep it light. We didn’t want any nerves going out there. We knew just wanted to play our game and we did. We were excited and anxious to play.”
UND came out of the gates like a team possessed, they were relentless, they pushed the pace and took  a 3-1 lead to the locker room after one period of play.
In a surprise move, UND head coach Dave Hakstol reunited the Stephane Pattyn, Connor Gaarder and Derek Rodwell line and that move would pay immediate dividends. Combined, that line recorded five points in the first period (1g-4a—5pts).
This game would start differently than the previous two.  During the middle part of the first period, the Tigers started to push back and were buzzing the UND net.  UND goalie Zane Gothberg stood his ground, and came up big, making three big saves. And just like that – UND would clear the zone – take the puck down the ice and Troy Stecher would hammer home his second goal of the year. With the goal tonight, Stecher broke a 30-game drought.
The Tigers were only able to get one past Gothberg in the first period and UND would take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. UND would outshoot C.C. 13-8.
In the second period, UND looked like they were trying to sit on the lead. Tigers forward Michael Morin would cut the lead to 3-2. The Tigers  would outshoot UND 12-9 in the second period.
In the third period the two teams would exchange goals and UND would hang on for the 4-3 win, sending them to the Frozen Faceoff next weekend in Minneapolis.
After the game, head coach Dave Hakstol was asked if the line change had anything to do with the game three rally.
“It has nothing to do with us changing the lines,” Hakstol said. “It’s just those guys making plays. I thought everybody played hard. We got contributions from a lot of guys. You can probably ask anybody on our team, nobody cares who scores. The key is that we scored enough to win tonight and everybody contributed.”
With the loss, the Colorado College Tigers end their season with a (7-24-6) record. UND improved to (22-12-3) on the season. More importantly, UND moved up to 13 in the Pairwise Rankings.

Interesting Statistics

UND will make the postseason conference tourney for a 12th season in a row.
UND has a 13-0-0 record this season when they score four or more goals. Also, UND is 17-1-0 when they have the lead after two periods of play. On the flip side, UND is 1-9-1 when they trail after two periods of play.
UND has killed 28 of 30 opponent power plays (93.3 percent) over the last nine games.
UND goalie, Zane Gothberg has allowed two or fewer goals in 16 of his last 19 starts. He allowed exactly 3 goals in each of the other three, all against Colorado College.
Tigers goalie Josh Thorimbert stopped 26-of-30 shots and wit the loss ends his season with a 7-23-3 record. UND goalie Zane Gothberg stopped 27-of-30 shots he faced and improved to 17-8-3 on the season.

Women's Olympic Hockey: UND's Michelle Karvinen best woman's forward at the 2014 OIympics

UND All-World forward Michelle Karvinen has won the Directorate Award as the best forward in the 2014 Women's Olympic Hockey. That's an awesome honor for Karvinen. Now, will she even make second team All-WCHA? I think she deserves to. Karvinen scored (5g-2a--7pts) during the 2014 Sochi games.

UND and BSU tie in Bemidji

emidji, MN – The University of North Dakota entered Friday’s game against the Bemidji State Beavers riding a seven-game winning streak. Unfortunately, that seven-game win streak would come to an end with a 1-1 tie against the Beavers.

Adam Walsh saves the Beavers from defeat

I know it’s cliché, but you can cue the hot goalie reference. You have to give credit where credit is due. Junior goalie Adam Walsh was very good on Friday night. UND bombed the net with shots. UND did everything right, but score goals.
UND spent a lot of time in BSU’s end of the rink, but had nothing to show for it. The shots were very lopsided, as UND outshot BSU 38-14 through three-periods of play. UND threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Beavers, but Walsh did not bend. It just wasn’t meant to be, Bemidji State junior goalie Adam Walsh stood his ground stopping 37-of-38 shots during regulation. UND’s fortunes didn’t change in the overtime either, as Walsh was equally good, stopping five more shots.

Walsh unlikely starter

If Beavers freshman goalie Jesse Wilkins hadn’t been hurt, Walsh wouldn’t have been the starter. Currently, Wilkins is suffering from a groin injury and was unable to go. The Beavers coaching staff inserted Adam Walsh in his place and the junior goalie didn’t disappoint.

Close but no cigar

The Beavers would come close to winning the game in the overtime period. With 30 seconds left in overtime, Beaver forward Radoslav Illo rang a puck off the pipe. UND goalie Zane Gothberg had no idea where the puck was. The puck was cleared by a UND defender and Brendan O’Donnell had a chance going the other way that was saved by Walsh.
After the game, Bemidji State head coach Tom Serratore sounded pleased with the tie against UND.
“We were on our heels,” Serratore said. “They played with great pace. Our puck management wasn’t very good in that first period and we allowed them to play a 200-foot game.”
“That’s not want you want them to do. You have to play a halfcourt game with them. You have to manage the puck, and possess the puck down low. The first period we neglected to do that.”
After the game, UND head coach Dave Hakstol didn’t seem all that satisfied with the tie.
“You can always do a little more,” Hakstol said. “We played well. We played hard for 60 minutes. We’ve got to, somewhere along the way, find a way to make one more play in a game like tonight.”
“We have to be a little better. We have to have a lot of the same, but a little bit better. We’re playing for a series (win). That’s what’s left on the table for us. We have to play a little bit better hockey game.”
To some the tie will seem like a loss, but I think we should look at it as a continuation of an eight-game unbeaten streak.
